Montessori Flower Arranging: Practical Life Skills

Every house is a little more lively with fresh flowers. You can pick your own from your yard or purchase a bouquet from your local flower shop. Either way, your little one will enjoy creating a beautiful arrangement and making their home a little more colorful.

Materials Needed for Montessori Flower Arranging:

  1. Fresh Flowers
  2. Scissors
  3. Vase (be sure your child is confident in working with glass before presenting this lesson)
  4. Water
  5. Hand Towel
  6. Small Discard Bowl

First, carefully demonstrate filling the vase 1/4 full with water. If any water spills, use a hand towel to clean it up.

Next, choose a flower to cut and gently remove the leaves. As you do this, place the leaves in the discard bowl.

Then, measure and observe how much of the stem needs to be cut before adding the flower to the vase.

After that, carefully cut each flower stem, making sure to arrange the flowers thoughtfully in the vase.

Once your arrangement is complete, find a special place in your environment to display the vase.

Finally, return to the work table, discard any remaining leaves, dry the table, and put away the scissors.

Benefits of Montessori Flower Arranging

Creating a beautiful environment is one of the foundational principles of Montessori that we strive to maintain at home. For this reason, arranging flowers is a wonderful activity that allows children to express creativity while also developing fine motor skills. As a bonus, it adds a touch of color and beauty to their home, making the space even more inviting!

Adaptations for Montessori Flower Arranging

If you have young children, to begin with, you may want to start with silk flowers and leave out the water until they are old enough to handle real flowers responsibly.

In addition, take time to explore the flowers in your botany lesson, as this can deepen their understanding and appreciation of nature.

On the other hand, older children may enjoy creating more elaborate arrangements using floral craft bricks or even designing wreaths to decorate the home.

Bible Lesson for Children:

  • Flowers need water like we need the Holy Spirit.
  • Flowers need plant food to keep their vibrance like we need the Word of God.
  • Flowers need their stems trimmed like we need the bad parts of our characters removed.
  • Flowers need sunshine and turn their little faces towards the light like we need Jesus.

Memory Verse Montessori Flower Arranging

"The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever."

~ Isaiah 40:8
