Please step into our Montessori Art Space at Home! I'm excited to share with you our favorite art supplies and how we are using them in our home. My son is 4.5 years old and he is already creating some gorgeous masterpieces to hang up on the wall and enjoy.
Art Supplies
The other day I was inspired to buy Little Bee "real" art supplies and stopped in at an art supply store. It was like entering a candy shop for me! I really REALLY love art supplies. It's all so beautiful to me. The thought of teaching Little Bee how to draw and paint, has actually inspired me to also want to paint my own creations. I took art classes in college, but I really haven't painted since then... 15 plus years ago!!
In the photo below, you will see an example of the art supplies we own.

Van Gogh Stained Glass Art
This Dover Activity Book of Van Gogh is gorgeous! Little Bee loved painting the masterpieces in his own creative way.
Sea Life - Watercolor Pencils and Stencils
Since I have such a passion and love for art, I decided that Little Bee and I will start nature journaling. This is more of a Charlotte Mason approach to learning. However, I do think it fits nicely with Montessori materials and concepts.
I thought a nice place to start nature journaling was with fun zoology stencils, since Little Bee is still young and mostly draws circles and lines freehand.
Little Bee colored the crab with watercolor pencils and then added water to paint him red. He learned how to dip the paintbrush into the water and then carefully tap it on the side of the water jar. It was important that he didn't apply too much water to the design or else it would overflow the outlines of the crab. After he was finished painting, I labeled the anatomical parts of the crab and hung him up on the wall.
I highly recommend watercolor pencils! They are really enjoyable to use and Little Bee loves to sharpen them (fine motor skills) when they become dull.
Insect Stencils
Little Bee also watercolor painted various insects. After they completely dried, I labeled the anatomical parts of each insect. Then all the insects were hung up on the wall for display and as a feature for our insect unit study.
We will save these insect stencils to use in our homeschool learning activities over the years. Plus, I think they are gorgeous! Little Bee was creative in how he colored and designed each insect. He learned how to carefully paint them so that they didn't run over the lines too much. You can see the brown and purple beetle were some of his first paintings. He carefully choose the colors to paint each part of the Hercules Beetle. The purple grasshopper (photo below) was one of his ending creations and it is beautiful!
Montessori Art Space at Home: Displaying Artwork
This is how we hung up and displayed our art work. I used twine, little clothes pins, and two small nails in the wall. The little clothes pins make it easy to change out the art work.
