Montessori Flower Arranging: Practical Life Skills
Every house is a little more lively with fresh flowers. You can pick your own from your yard or purchase a bouquet from your local flower shop. Either way, your little one will enjoy creating a beautiful arrangement and making their home a little more colorful.
Materials Needed for Montessori Flower Arranging:
- Fresh Flowers
- Scissors
- Vase (be sure your child is confident in working with glass before presenting this lesson)
- Water
- Hand Towel
- Small Discard Bowl
Presentation for Montessori Flower Arranging
- Carefully demonstrate filling the vase 1/4 full with water. If any water spills, demonstrate using hand towel to clean water.
- Choose a flower to cut then remove the leaves. Place the leaves in the discard bowl.
- Measure and notice how much stem should be cut before adding the cut flower to the vase.
- Carefully cut each flower stem before arranging the flowers in the vase.
- Once you are finished creating your flower arrangement, place the vase somewhere in your environment.
- Come back to the work table, discard leaves, dry table, and put away scissors.
Benefits of Montessori Flower Arranging
Creating a beautiful environment is one of the Montessori foundations we like to maintain at home. Arranging flowers give the child the ability to create and focus on fine motor skills while they make their home a little more colorful!
Adaptations for Montessori Flower Arranging
If you have young children, you may want to start with silk flowers and leave out the water until they are old enough to be responsible with water and real flowers.
Also, take time to explore the flowers in your botany lesson!
Older children may like to create more elaborate arrangements with floral craft bricks or create wreaths for decorating the home.
Bible Lesson for Children:
Flowers need water like we need the Holy Spirit. Flowers need plant food to keep their vibrance like we need the Word of God. Flowers need their stems trimmed like we need the bad parts of our characters removed. Flowers need sunshine and turn their little faces towards the light like we need Jesus.
Memory Verse Montessori Flower Arranging
"The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever."
~ Isaiah 40:8
