This month for the 12 Months of Montessori series, we are featuring our favorite Montessori materials. Our family's favorite materials are the Montessori zoology puzzles. These vibrant colored puzzles are beautiful to look at and touch. They are wonderful for hand-eye coordination and for developing the fine motor muscles of the hand. I love that these puzzles provide a hands-on opportunity for a child to learn the anatomical parts of an animal. These puzzles work wonderfully with nomenclature cards to learn more detailed anatomy of each animal. Over the last couple of years, we have used the zoology puzzles in our unit studies to learn the five main Montessori classes of vertebrates - frog (amphibians), bird, fish, turtle (reptile), and horse (mammal). Please scroll down through this list of puzzles and click on the link to visit the unit study for each animal.
Also, there are many extension exercises that can add value to these puzzles. Please visit, Extending Zoology Puzzles to learn about the extension exercises.

My kiddos LOVE their zoo puzzles. I thought they had grown out of them but then I came across a few variations, introduced them, and they became their favorite activities on the shelves. Love the pictures of your little guy hard at work.
